Indian benchmark indices are likely to open on a negative note on August 31, tracking weak cues from GIFT Nifty, which was trading around 24,218.50 in early trade.

In a volatile session on August 28, Indian equity markets ended higher, snapping a two-day losing streak, with the Nifty reclaiming and closing above 24,150, supported largely by gains in IT stocks.

On Friday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 77264.51 up by 330.92 points or by 0.43 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24175.65 up by 84.8 points or by 0.35 %.

On the global front, most Asian markets declined in early trading as US Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s hawkish comments at the Jackson Hole Symposium raised concerns about a possible rate hike as soon as next month. Japan’s Nikkei 225 and South Korea’s Kospi were trading 1.8 per cent and 2.4 per cent down, respectively.

Last Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 ended 0.02 per cent and 0.3 per cent down, respectively. The Nasdaq Composite settled 0.52 per cent lower. On NSE, total number of shares traded was 475.06 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 110671.11 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 51858 with a total turnover of Rs. 8408.51 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 694644 with a total turnover of Rs. 48069.21 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 89650083 with a total turnover of Rs. 14155871.04 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 4174268 with a total turnover of Rs. 299707.73 Crore.

The FIIs on 28/08/2026 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 17261.07 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 183.21 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 16386.14 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 811.19 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. 874.93 Crore and Rs. -627.98
